A maintenance manager can sound like a very broad title for a job position.  Even though most companies seeking for this type of employee are looking for someone with manufacturing experience, there are some companies seeking for aircraft maintenance managers and even for fleet maintenance manager jobs.  Because most companies are looking for facilities and manufacturing maintenance managers, this is the area we will focus on for this article.

Maintenance Manager Jobs Description – The primary job of a manager in this field is to assist the plant engineers in leading and directing the salary paid personnel to carry out all the phases of the plant functions.  It is your job to head and make sure that maintenance on general items, cold end mechanization, and any other area of teh plant get done.  It is also your primary job to inspect repairs and installations to make sure they were done right and to plan and carry out preventative maintenance on all facility machinery.  It is also part of the job to support compliance restrictions and work with local, state and federal regulations to be in compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and other government federal agencies. 

As a manager you must manage your personnel.  You are the go to person for employee problems, and you must be a team leader to help your employees accomplish team and company goals.  As the primary manager it is also your responsibility to hire and interview new employees as well as discipline and fire employees that are not in compliance or who refuse to follow company policies.  You are responsible for all the work your team does, so if your team does poorly it reflects solely on you.  Having the people skills to motivate and inspire your team is a must for a maintenance manager position.  Working in a factory, you may have apprenticeship programs, and if so, you will be primarily in charge of these new employees and their progression.
